Suitable for all genders of all ages.
I trained with the Arvigo® Institute and am an Advanced Clinical Applications Certified Practitioner in The Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy®, now known as Abdominal Therapy.
I am a member of the Institute of the ATC (Abdominal Therapy Collective) and The Arvigo® Institute.
Abdominal Therapy is based on the work of Dr Rosita Arvigo and Don Elijio Panti, the renowned Maya shaman of Belize. Dr Rosita Arvigo established the Arvigo® Institute and later, The Abdominal Collective.
Abdominal Massage Therapy is a non-invasive external therapy that incorporates the lower and upper abdominal area, the back and sacrum, anatomy, physiology, lifestyle choices and emotional release to address current health issues and to prevent the progression of chronic disease.
It not only addresses current health conditions but also works to prevent them.
Abdominal Therapy is suitable for all genders at any stage of life.
A unique aspect of this therapy is the empowering self-care massage you will be taught to do at home. It is an integral part of this work and a life-long tool to maintain optimal health; it is truly a gift.

For The Uterus
Abdominal therapy is a wonderful way to decongest and balance the whole pelvic area, including the uterus. 75% of women are walking around with a tipped uterus and don’t even know it. Many women are told that this is no big deal. but it is! A tilted uterus can cause a multitude of symptoms: painful periods, reoccurring bladder infections, difficulty conceiving, lower backache and painful sex to name but a few.
Just a few extra ounces sitting on blood and lymph vessels and the digestive system can cause havoc throughout the different systems in the body. This external massage gently lifts and guides the uterus into its optimal position in the lower pelvis. Abdominal therapy can even support a fully prolapsed uterus to regain its optimal position within the pelvis.
Many things can cause the uterus to become misaligned -
Injury to the sacrum or tailbone from falls (even early in our childhood), High impact accidents, Wearing high heel shoes (tilts pelvic alignment), Surgical procedures, Emotional traumas, High impact sports, Walking barefoot on cold floors / wet grass, Running on concrete, Poor alignment of the pelvis with the spinal column, Over-working, Lifting and carrying heavy things, especially too soon after childbirth.
Abdominal therapy is also a wonderful way to naturally regulate and improve painful periods and the quality of the blood flow. That’s right - periods are not supposed to be painful!
* Those who have had hysterectomies also benefit from Abdominal therapy as it improves circulation in and around the area of the scar. When circulation is improved, scar tissue will be prevented from forming in the pelvis after surgery. Ligaments and other remaining organs are benefited from improving circulatory flow to the pelvis.
Symptoms of a tilted uterus include:
Painful or irregular menstruation, Painful or irregular ovulation, Dark or brown blood at the onset and end of menstruation, Headache or migraine with menstruation, Varicose veins of the legs and/or tired, weak or numb legs, Lower backache; back pain with menstruation , Endometriosis, Uterine fibroids and endometrial polyps, PMS/depression, Frequent urination, Bladder infections, Incontinence, Recurrent vaginal infections, Chronic miscarriages, Difficulty getting pregnant/infertility, Painful intercourse, Chronic constipation, Difficult menopause
“The uterus is the woman’s core, if it is out of balance, her whole life is out of balance - physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.” - Don Elijio Panti, Maya Shaman of Belize 1893-1996
For The Prostate Gland
The prostate has no room for growth or movement, so any swelling will quickly have an impact. Forward pressure on the bladder results in painful urination, incomplete urination, and incontinence. Backward pressure on the colon causes constipation, haemorrhoids, backache, and congestion. The swollen prostate gland can also cause painful ejaculation, impotence, premature or delayed ejaculation, bladder infections, varicose veins, tired/weak/numb legs and feet and in some cases even prostate cancer. The prostate also supports sperm health so it is important to keep this area healthy!
Clients have reported amazing results with Abdominal therapy. This subtle but powerful abdominal and pelvic massage aids in the decongestion and drainage of the tubules from the testicles to the prostate which supports the elimination, accumulation, concentration, and hardening of the milky fluid, further preventing disease. Movement of lymph prepares the system to eliminate the stagnant fluids of the prostate. This natural cleanse and detox often results in the passing of milky urine for a few days.
The nerves supplying the prostate exit from the sacrum. Any trauma, fall, and resulting scar tissue in this area may affect the health of the prostate and also sexual function. Abdominal massage sessions include attention to the lower back, sacrum, coccyx and gluteals to improve nerve communication to the organs and also scar tissue.
The self-care massage you will be taught works directly on the abdomen to ensure optimum circulation, decreasing toxic congestion in the pelvic bowl, and it supports the work done in the sessions.
We can eat all the healthy food we like, but unless the digestive system is working optimally, all those health-giving nutrients will not be absorbed. Upper abdominal massage is included in Abdominal Therapy, which relieves chronic tension in the diaphragm that can obstruct blood flow to the digestive tract and reproductive organs. Chronic digestive complaints are common in those with pelvic dysfunction and reproductive problems.
It will not occur to many people who have back, shoulder or neck pain, that it may be resulting from digestion problems. The nerves which connect to specific organs in our gut also connect to certain muscles in the back and neck. If the bowel slows causing constipation, the lower back can tighten. If one of your digestive organs is under stress, the nerve which connects to the corresponding muscle in your back or neck will then become tense and painful. For more info on how the gut can cause back pain, read my blog HERE
Many anxieties and emotions through life are stored in our body's tissues and organs. A very common place is in the organs of the digestive system. Those so-called "butterflies in the stomach" can lead to constipation, indigestion, heartburn, gastritis, and eventually to Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Gasto Esophageal Reflux (GERD), Crohn's and more.
Stresses and emotions cause the small intestine and colon to be "twisted or kinked" leading the blockages in the flow of peristalsis. Surrounding fascia creates adhesions that mal-position organs and impede proper blood flow and enzyme secretions. These techniques slowly improve fascia adhesions, scar tissue and remove any "kinks" in the digestive tract. Clients often report great improvement in digestive function within a few treatments - even more quickly if they are diligent with the self-care massage I teach the Arvigo Abdominal therapy sessions.
Abdominal Therapy is used to improve fertility by moving congested lymph fluid, oxygenating blood, increasing immune function and maintaining proper nerve flow in pelvic organs, and of course, restoring the uterus to its correct position.
No matter what fertility-related complaints or ailments you may have as a client or couple I will address the five systems of flow - arterial, venous, nerve, lymphatic and energetic -, help to detox and decongest the whole area including the abdominal organs, which will normalise and restore functions according to nature’s original plan. If the whole area is in the best possible health then this gives the body the best possible chance for conception and pregnancy.
Our non-invasive, external fertility massage techniques restore homeostasis, or balance within, as well as haemo-dynamics, or unimpeded flow of blood and body fluids.
It takes up to 90 days from start to finish for a single sperm cell to develop. The testes create millions of sperm every day, so there are always sperm at different developmental stages in the testes, ensuring constant production. Regular abdominal massage to the pelvic bowl and abdomen with your daily Self Care Massage and professional Abdominal massage sessions will ensure healthy blood flow, improved removal of acidic wastes, and therefore healthier sperm.
The prostate gland also supports sperm health so do read the above information on 'For The Prostate Gland'
Abdominal Therapy is also known as fertility massage, abdominal massage, Maya massage, womb massage.
For Emotional Healing
Our emotions are stored in our gut. We have all heard the sayings "butterflies in my stomach", "sick to my stomach", "gut feeling". Harbouring negative and painful emotions can have a profound effect on our quality of life. Along with causing significant emotional damage, they can also greatly affect our physical tissues, digestion and health. Emotions stored in the abdominal area often cause physical symptoms - tension in the tissues and physical kinks in the digestive tract to name a few. These can lead to many digestive problems including IBS and Crohn's disease. There is now strong scientific evidence that our emotions play a major role in our gut health and vice versa, so emotional release is essential for physical and mental health.
Stored emotions fester and prevent us from having meaningful, lasting relationships. Emotional release is a healing mechanism that enables us to become more whole. In other words, it can also be seen as an integration of our true selves. Because of our social conditioning, we are taught to suppress emotions, so there is a constant build-up. This stuck energy does not go anywhere. It remains stuck within our bodies where it is said to create disease (dis-ease), tension and all manner of mental and physical illnesses. Whether we experience a traumatic event or develop negative feelings over a period of time, by releasing these emotions we can achieve greater well-being and live a more positive, productive life.
Releasing trapped emotions is the key to both our mental and physical wellbeing. Without some sort of emotional release therapy, we will be forever stuck and controlled by our emotions.
Men, in general, do not have the same opportunity to release emotions. Society has enforced an illusion of "manliness" where men are expected to stay strong, to refrain from showing fear or emotions, and should certainly not be been seen crying on their friend's shoulder! What an impossible archetype to live up to without having an adverse effect on health and well-being So many stored up, unreleased emotions for fear of social judgment. I create a safe, confidential space and your opportunity to have a listening, compassionate, non-judgmental ear, you will be heard.
Abdominal Therapy is well known to be able to help release these stored emotions.
For Post Partum
After the birth of your baby, the body needs a lot of support, rest, healing and nourishment in this vulnerable and precious time. The first three months after the birth are often considered as the 'fourth trimester'.
Abdominal Therapy is highly recommended. It is a specialised gentle, non-obtrusive abdominal and sacrum massage that ensures the uterus and abdominal muscles are aligned and balanced. It is quite common in childbirth for the uterus to become slightly off centre, causing other imbalances in the abdomen which can cause adverse health conditions over time. This massage will make sure everything is re-aligned and healthy. It improves healing of Diastasis Recti, provides support and relief for postpartum depression and supports faster healing and strengthening of the uterine ligaments, which stretch significantly during pregnancy and birth. Abdominal Therapy supports both the uterus and other abdominal organs coming back to their optimal position in as timely a way as possible and to heal any specific conditions, such as postnatal prolapse or other pelvic discomforts, as well as breaking up scar tissue after a Caesarian.
This massage therapy is also wonderful to reconnect you to your centre, your womb, giving thanks for the amazing job of creating a new life. The Maya believe a woman’s centre is her uterus.
“If a woman’s uterus is out of balance, so is she,” - Don Elijo Panti
I recommend you to receive at least 3 Arvigo sessions as soon after the birth as possible - anytime from day 2 after a natural birth or 6 weeks after a Caesarian birth.
For All Stages of Menopause
Abdominal Therapy is extremely beneficial in the menopausal years. It can relieve many symptoms including hot flashes. If there are nerve blockages, signals to the brain can be affected and as a result, the release of hormones. As well as supporting hormonal balance it also helps with fluid dynamics within the pelvis. The uterus and ovaries continue to communicate for another 25 years after menopause - pretty amazing!
Abdominal therapy can assist in the relief from vaginal dryness and painful sex (dyspareunia). It supports the relief of pelvic congestion as well as increasing circulation, improving digestion, aiding in the absorption of nutrients and calming the central nervous system. Abdominal therapy helps to maintain the strength and integrity of the pelvis against prolapse of organs later in life and can even help with prolapse itself. During peri-menopause, the therapy helps to balance hormones and encourages a thorough cleansing and detox of the uterus to rid it of any residual toxins.
Our wombs need to be cleansed at this time, because through menopause our wombs shrink to an almost pre-pubescent size. A wise abdominal therapy teacher describes the uterus as shrinking to a diamond, our power and wisdom are concentrated and powerful! Abdominal treatments during this time help to connect a woman to the wisdom of peri-menopause and menopause, as well as her innate, womanly wisdom we all have at this stage of our lives.
The Self - Care Massage
The unique aspect of Abdominal Therapy is the self-care massage you will be taught, which is not only a vital aspect of the overall treatment but also a life-long tool to maintain optimal health and balance.
Learning how to massage your own abdomen helps to sustain and continue the work done at your treatment. It is truly empowering to be more in control of your well-being, and to be physically and emotionally connected to the treatment process.
With each follow-up appointment, you will be able to review the self-care massage to ensure the techniques are being performed correctly, discussing any concerns you may have.
It is also preventative against the many health issues listed at the top of this page, so it truly is a unique gift.
A Brief Overview of How It Works
Abdominal therapy physically works on the lower and upper abdomen, stomach, back and sacrum areas. It promotes the systems of flow in all these areas - blood, lymph, energy and nerve.
The lower abdominal therapy decongests the whole area and assists the uterus to regain its optimum position. Eighty per cent of women have a tilted uterus which, if not dealt with, can lead to many health problems. It also helps break down scar tissue and adhesions, decongests the lymph and improves blood circulation.
The therapy on the pelvic bowl helps to balance hormones, regulate menstruation and improve the quality of the blood.
It draws up lymph through the liver to clean and helps to ensure there are no restrictions of lymph flow. The lymphatic system supports and works in harmony with the immune system.
It stimulates and relaxes the muscles in the intestines. This is where strips of muscle can go hard which will secrete acid and gas, causing inflammation. The upper abdominal therapy works on the solar plexus which is the area of a major lymph gland. This is also when emotions are released during the therapy. It also ]innervates the adrenal gland.
The digestive tract can develop ‘kinks’ which prevent proper absorption of nutrients. These can be caused by, amongst other things, suppressed emotions. The upper abdominal therapy irons out kinks in the digestive tract, supports digestion and relaxes the diaphragm.
It stimulates and promotes detox of the liver, gallbladder, spleen, stomach and pancreas. It promotes serotonin and dopamine which performs countless functions and processes in the body, from sleep to digestion to affecting emotions to metabolism. It also promotes the liver’s production of fibrinolysin.
It also works on the linea alba, reduces tension in the fascia, works on the autonomic nervous system, the nerves connecting to the back of the spine, conception and governing vessel, abdominal organs, glands, blood vessels, vagus nerve, descending thoracic artery and oesophagus.
The work performed on the back and hip areas stretch out the nerves and ligaments that enervate and support the whole pelvic area, going down to the legs and feet. It also addresses an important nerve point for the ovarian artery and suspensory ovarian ligament.
The work performed on the sacrum helps to identify issues of congestion and blood flow to the area, as well as scar tissue, tension and restricted movement.
The work performed around the coccyx addresses the nerve which innervates and is connected to the external genitalia of both sexes and the skin around the anus, anal canal and perineum. Sometimes this nerve can feel numb or over-sensitive (not painful) and working on it can balance this, which can also enhance orgasm.
This is an investment into your personal long term health and well-being. You can't put a price on that!
This is NOT "just a massage", this is a therapy that has the potential of incredible health and life-changing results.

Dr Rosita Arvigo studied with many traditional healers for over 40 years, the most notable of whom was Don Elijio Panti, the renowned Maya shaman of Belize.
Rosita did a 13-year apprenticeship, learning his knowledge passed down for over five thousand years. She combined her knowledge of anatomy, physiology and naprapathy, and then established the Arvigo Institute, and later The Abdominal Collective, which now trains healthcare professionals worldwide. Rosita founded the Ix-Chel Tropical Research Foundation which supports the traditions of Maya healers, helping to preserve and promote knowledge of sustainable organic cultivation as a substitute for destruction and depletion of the rainforest.
